YOUNG LAWYERS SUMMIT TO OFFER PRACTICAL SKILLS, FREE CLE SEPTEMBER 17

Early-career and new attorneys are the focus of the inaugural Young Lawyers Summit to be held Thursday, September 17th, in conjunction with The Florida Bar Fall Meeting at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld.
Both events are free to members.

Florida Bar President Michael Fox Orr will kick off the Young Lawyers Summit Luncheon on day two of the Fall Meeting by moderating a Judicial Fireside Chat featuring Florida Supreme Court Justice Jamie Grosshans and Judge Mary Alice Nardella of the Sixth District Court of Appeal.

The luncheon will start at noon and also feature a panel discussion spotlighting Bar opportunities for young lawyers, moderated by Council of Sections Chair Iris Elijah and YLD President Reno Pierre, and will include speakers Tenesia Hall, Family Law Section chair, Chasity O’Steen, County, City, and Local Government Law Section chair, Alicia Perez, Solo & Small Firms Section co-chair, and Elizabeth Scarola, Health Law Section chair-elect.

“Attendees will [then] participate in practical CLE programming across three tracks, Criminal Law, Civil Litigation, and Transactional Practice, which will allow us to go beyond the law and help young lawyers strengthen the skills necessary to practice competently and effectively,” Pierre said.
Judges, experienced practitioners, and Bar leaders from across the state will present and moderate the summit sessions. CLE credit will be provided.

- Taking and Defending Depositions, 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Presented by Judge LaShawnda Jackson of the Ninth Judicial Circuit, Gregorio Francis of Osborne Francis & Pettis in West Palm Beach, and Florida Bar Board of Governors member Zack Zuroweste of Persante Zuroweste in Clearwater.
- Motion Practice 101, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Presented by Judge Carlos Mendoza of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Bar Board of Governors member Manuel Farach of Taft Stettinius & Hollister in West Palm Beach, Richard B. Mangan, Jr., of Rissman Barrett Hurt Donahue & McLain in Tampa, and Dwayne Robinson of Kozyak, Tropin & Throckmorton in Miami.
Criminal Track Sessions
- Criminal Know the Numbers: Criminal Punishment Scoresheets and Smarter Plea Negotiation, 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Presented by Government Lawyer Section Chair-elect Alexa Marie Cline of the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Criminal Law Section Chair-elect Jude Faccidomo of Ratzan & Faccidomo in Miami, and Sarah Morris of the Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel, First Region.
- Evidence Essentials: View from the Bench, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Presented by Judge Jeramy Beasley of Orange County in the Ninth Judicial Circuit and Judge Barbara Leach of the Ninth Judicial Circuit, and moderated by Orange County Bar President Lisa Gong Guerrero of Gong Guerrero Law in Orlando.
Transactional Practice Track Sessions
- Contract Drafting 101, 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Presented by Judge Celia Thacker Dorn of Osceola County and Camara Williams of Smith & Williams Trial Group in Orlando.
- The Transactional Toolkit: Drafting Documents Every New Lawyer Should Master, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Presented by Natasha Selvaraj of Berlin Patten Ebling in Sarasota.
