Advance your dental career with VA

Every year, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides clinical experiences to over 1,000 dental residents and students at VA medical centers (VAMCs) across the country. Nearly half of all dentists in postgraduate dental education programs nationwide rotate through a VA facility at some point in their training, making VA one of the largest sponsors of advanced dental training positions in the U.S.

Whether you’re looking for hands-on residency training or a full-time role, VA allows you to learn and grow your career while serving our nation’s heroes. Keep reading to learn more.

A national leader in dental education

VA’s Medical and Dental Education Program pairs top academic institutions with VA medical centers to deliver graduate-level dental training. Trainees learn directly from VA’s dental faculty, many of whom hold joint appointments with university dental schools, in both clinical and research settings.

This partnership gives residents access to skilled specialists, state-of-the-art clinics and a patient population unlike any other. With approximately 1,000 dental residents and students training through VA each year, it’s easy to see why VA remains a top destination for postgraduate dental education.

CODA-accredited residency programs, wherever you want to train

VA sponsors 70 dental residency programs at facilities throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, so you can find a training site close to home. All dental residency training programs are Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited and include:

  • General Practice Residency (GPR), offered in 1-year and 2-year formats
  • Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)
  • Specialty residencies in endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics

Hands-on experience that shapes your career

As a VA resident or physician, you’ll treat a diverse Veteran patient population in both inpatient and outpatient settings, gaining experience with complex cases you won’t find everywhere. You will also train alongside highly skilled dentists who are invested in your growth, in clinics equipped with the latest technology and techniques.

“We’re getting trained with the latest scanners, the latest materials and we’re learning the latest techniques,” said George Kokkinos, a dental resident at the New York Harbor Healthcare System. “So that really helps us to be up-to-date and to be very competitive for the market.”
